Rolling grape leaves is slow work done by hand, one finger-sized parcel at a time, and in many Middle Eastern families it is a group activity before a feast.
In Arabic they are called warak enab; in Greek, dolmades. The vegetarian version is filled with rice, tomato, parsley, mint and lemon and served cold with olive oil, while the version with ground lamb is cooked in broth and served warm, sometimes with yogurt. Some kitchens cook them in the same pot as stuffed zucchini, layered over lamb chops.
Lamb fillings cost more than rice and herbs. On SemFood, 4 options from $7.99 to $23.99.
