Orange juice at breakfast is an American institution, but the juice menu has grown far beyond the carton since cold-pressed bars arrived in the big cities.
Fresh orange and apple juice remain the most ordered. Green juice blends kale, celery, cucumber, apple and lemon, often with ginger. Carrot and ginger, beet and pomegranate are other favorites at healthy spots. Cold-pressed juice is squeezed by a hydraulic press instead of spun by a blade, which keeps more flavor and color, and it is sold in sealed bottles that travel well.
Cold-pressed costs much more than juice from a dispenser, and greens and pomegranate are pricier than orange. On SemFood, 112 juices from $1.79 to $8.90.
