Avocado toast became the most talked-about brunch item of the 2010s, and a whole menu of fancy toasts grew around it at American and Australian-style cafés.
The base is a thick slice of sourdough, toasted and topped with smashed avocado, lemon, chili flakes and flaky salt; a poached or soft egg on top is the usual upgrade. Ricotta toast with honey and nuts, smoked salmon toast and chili oil avocado toast follow. At diners, toast is still the simple side: buttered white, wheat or rye, with jam.
Eggs, salmon and avocado raise the price. At the brunch places on SemFood, from $1.99 to $32.90.
